Inktober is an event taking place every October, where artists have to illustrate a word from Jake Parker‘s prompt list. The challenge is to draw every day for the month of October using an ink medium like brush pen, ball pen and a dip ink pen.
Role:
Illustration, Storytelling
Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, Ink pens
Challenge
To commit myself to draw once a day. The challenge is an opportunity to reconnect with my passion. I wanted to improve my drawing skills particularly my line work, the composition and the story. The highlight is the focus on analogue tools, you cannot hide your mistakes!
Solution
To prevent white pages, I decided to pick a repetitive element and illustrate it in different actions depending on the word. Planning was key! I would give myself one hour after university classes and dinner time to draw quick sketches. Some days were busier than others, so it was important to plan ahead and have couple of sketches ready. I also disciplined myself to try out different ink medium.
Result
Through the month, I developed my cat character named Gary and illustrated it in different situations. All the drawings were shared daily on my Instagram. My ultimate goal was to bind all the drawings and create my first illustration book. I attended bookbinding workshop but ran out of time during my academic year. So, my next challenge is to find a book binding workspace to complete my vision.
